In a groundbreaking display of technology and sport, humanoid robots competed in a live martial arts tournament on Sunday in Hangzhou, eastern China — the first event of its kind globally.

The match, held at the Olympic Sports Center, was part of the China Media Group’s (CMG) World Robot Contest. Developed by Hangzhou-based Unitree Robotics, the robots demonstrated advanced fighting techniques in an event named the “Mech Combat Arena Competition.”

The event, broadcast internationally, featured both exhibition and competitive rounds where robots delivered rapid punches, kicks, and other martial arts moves. Organisers highlighted that each robot had sophisticated motion control systems allowing real-time response and recovery, especially after falls.

Unitree Robotics’ engineers explained that the robots needed to coordinate internal sensors and motor functions within milliseconds to maintain balance and execute moves. Developers also had to overcome challenges related to energy efficiency, heat management, and fall-resistance during intense activity.

According to Unitree officials, all software and hardware components were developed in China, pointing to the country’s rapid progress in robotics and artificial intelligence.

The tournament also featured immersive broadcasting innovations. CMG used augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and free-view camera setups to enhance viewer engagement. Stylised visuals and expert commentary helped transform the event into both a technological showcase and an educational experience.

Organisers believe the competition marks a new chapter in both robotics development and the future of competitive entertainment — blending science, sport, and storytelling in a unique format.
