In a significant boost for Australia, Captain Sam Kerr has declared herself available to play in their crucial match against Olympic champions Canada in the Women’s World Cup. Kerr, who is also the face of the World Cup being co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, had been sidelined due to a calf injury before the tournament began. Her absence was felt as the Matildas managed a narrow 1-0 win against Ireland but suffered a surprising 3-2 defeat to Nigeria in their opening matches.

With their World Cup hopes on the line, Australia eagerly awaits the return of the prolific Chelsea striker, who has been a key goalscorer for the team. Speaking to the media in Brisbane, Kerr confirmed her availability for the upcoming match but remained tight-lipped about the extent of her participation, citing strategic reasons to keep the opposition guessing.

Meanwhile, England’s European champions face an anxious wait concerning the fitness of midfielder Keira Walsh. During their recent victory over Denmark, Walsh was stretchered off the field with what appeared to be a serious knee injury. Knee injuries have been a recurring concern in women’s football, and England was already without captain Leah Williamson and Euro 2022 Golden Boot winner Beth Mead due to similar issues.

Following the 1-0 win against Denmark, England’s coach Sarina Wiegman expressed concern about Walsh’s condition but stated that a definitive assessment would be made after further evaluation.

In addition to Walsh’s injury, Colombia’s star player, 18-year-old attacker Linda Caicedo, also faces uncertainties ahead of their match against Germany. Caicedo experienced discomfort during training and held her chest, but the team’s coach, Nelson Abadia, described it as “an episode of tiredness” related to the pressure of debuting in a senior World Cup. He reassured them that Caicedo has recovered and the decision about her participation will be made with time.

As the tournament progresses, the battle to secure spots in the knockout rounds intensifies. On Saturday, three matches were scheduled. Sweden faced Italy, while France and Brazil had a heavyweight meeting. France, a strong contender, needed a victory after drawing 0-0 with Jamaica. However, they faced a Brazil side in high spirits after a dominant 4-0 victory against Panama. The last match of the day featured Jamaica taking on Panama.

With the Women’s World Cup offering thrilling matches and surprises, fans eagerly await the performances of top players and teams as they vie for victory on the global stage.
