Overseas Stars Return to Franchises

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to restart on May 17 after a brief pause, with several overseas players making their way back to India. Gujarat Titans will be boosted by the return of former England captain Jos Buttler and South African pacer Gerald Coetzee, who are expected to rejoin the squad on May 14.

Both players had flown home following the tournament’s suspension on May 9 due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. However, the rest of Gujarat’s overseas lineup — including Rashid Khan, Sherfane Rutherford, Kagiso Rabada, and Karim Janat — remained with the team during the break.

Sherfane Rutherford, however, has been named in the West Indies squad for the upcoming ODI series against England, scheduled from May 29 to June 3. The series overlaps with the IPL playoffs, casting doubt over his availability for the final stages.

Australia’s Pat Cummins and Travis Head are also expected to rejoin Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) ahead of the league’s return. Both players had left India during the break but are reportedly keen to rejoin the team. Cummins, despite SRH being out of playoff contention, is likely to return in his role as captain.

Cricket Australia has confirmed that Cummins and Head are part of the squad for the ICC World Test Championship final against South Africa, which begins on June 11 at Lord’s.

There is still no confirmation about the return of other SRH overseas players, including Heinrich Klaasen and Wiaan Mulder — the latter also included in South Africa’s WTC squad.

The IPL released its revised schedule on May 12, with 13 league games and four playoffs to be played across six cities. Playoff venues are yet to be confirmed.
