India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra is preparing to host the first-ever Neeraj Chopra Classic, a new international javelin competition named after him, on 24 May 2025 in Bengaluru. The event is expected to attract some of the sport’s top names, with Chopra aiming to create a global platform for javelin throwers and inspire young talent in the region.

Among the big names lined up for the event are former world champions Anderson Peters and Julius Yego, Olympic gold medallist Thomas Röhler, and American thrower Curtis Thompson. Indian media has also reported that Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem — who made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics by winning Pakistan’s first-ever individual gold medal — has been invited to take part.

Nadeem’s 92.97m throw in Paris not only earned him a gold medal but also set a new Olympic record, surpassing the previous mark held by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen. His performance edged out defending champion Neeraj Chopra, who had taken gold at Tokyo 2020.

Despite the strained relations between India and Pakistan, which have impacted sporting ties including bilateral cricket, athletes from both sides continue to compete internationally. However, participation in each other’s countries typically requires government approval.

Chopra shared that he had extended a personal invitation to Nadeem, who responded that he would consult with his coach before confirming. Final confirmation, Chopra noted, would depend on the necessary clearances from authorities.

Looking ahead, Chopra stated his intention to make the event an annual affair and eventually expand it to include more track and field disciplines. He believes the competition could play a vital role in developing homegrown talent by allowing them to compete alongside world-class athletes.

While Arshad Nadeem’s participation remains uncertain, Chopra remains optimistic, expressing hope that his rival will join the lineup in what could be a memorable sporting occasion.
