Former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Hafeez has clarified his statement questioning the legacy of Pakistan’s 1990s cricketing greats.
His remarks, made after Pakistan’s poor performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy, sparked strong criticism from former players and fans.
Pakistan, led by Mohammad Rizwan, failed to win a single match in the tournament.
They suffered defeats against New Zealand and India, while their final game against Bangladesh was abandoned due to rain.
Amidst the criticism, Hafeez questioned the impact left by Pakistan’s 1990s players, stating that despite their talent, they did not secure any ICC trophies after the 1992 World Cup.
His comments were met with strong opposition from former cricketers, including Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Inzamam-ul-Haq, who defended their era’s contributions to Pakistan cricket.
In response to the backlash, Hafeez took to social media to clarify his stance.
He explained that his comments were not meant as a personal attack on any player but were focused on Pakistan’s record in ICC events.
He also stated that some media outlets had misinterpreted his words.
