FIFA suspended the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) with immediate effect after its Congress rejected proposed constitutional amendments.

FIFA stated that the suspension was due to the failure of PFF to adopt a revised constitution ensuring fair elections under its normalisation process.

The suspension will only be lifted if the PFF Congress approves the version of the constitution presented by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

During a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Inter-provincial Coordination, Haroon Malik warned that Pakistan faced the risk of suspension.

The suspension increases pressure on the Pakistan Football Federation Congress to comply with the much needed demands of international football body.

During a meeting last month, the Congress rejected the proposed amendments, which primarily focused on the eligibility criteria for the presidency.

FIFA had given the PFF Normalisation Committee until February 15 to conduct elections, but the refusal of Congress to adopt the amendments stalled the process.

The chairman of the PFF Normalisation Committee, appointed by FIFA, has reached out to Congress members in an effort to arrange meetings to resolve the issue.

The PFF has been embroiled in crises and controversies since 2015, and this marks the third instance of Pakistan’s suspension since 2017.
