Benin made history at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after winning their first-ever Afcon match. The team defeated Botswana in Rabat, earning their first points of the tournament and a proud moment for the nation.
The winning goal came in the first half from defender Yohan Roche. He played a quick one-two with striker Steve Mounie, who had returned to the team after missing Benin’s opening loss to DR Congo. Roche then sent a looping shot from inside the box. The ball took a slight deflection and sailed over Botswana goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko.
That single goal proved enough. It was a special moment for Benin, as it marked their first victory in normal time across 16 Afcon matches played over five tournaments. Players and fans celebrated a long-awaited success.
Botswana pushed hard to find an equaliser. Soon after the goal, Mothusi Johnson came close with a brilliant free-kick that struck the crossbar. It was a moment of bad luck for Botswana, who showed strong effort despite the defeat.
In the second half, Botswana continued to attack. However, goalkeeper Phoko was kept busy at the other end too. He made two excellent saves, first denying Tamimou Ouorou and then reacting quickly to stop another powerful shot that took a heavy touch off Johnson.
This defeat marked Botswana’s second loss in the group stage, making their path forward more difficult. Still, their performance showed promise and fighting spirit.
Both teams will now play their final Group D matches on Tuesday. Benin will face tournament favorites Senegal in Tangier, while Botswana will meet DR Congo in Rabat. Senegal and DR Congo, both with three points, will face each other later on Saturday.
Despite earlier defeats, both coaches praised their teams’ efforts. For Benin, this historic win has already secured a proud place in Afcon history.
