Australian all-rounder, Marcus Stoinis, has announced his immediate retirement from ODI cricket, just weeks before the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.
The decision, revealed on Thursday, leaves Australia without a key all-rounder following the injury of Mitch Marsh, which has ruled him out of the tournament.
“Playing for Australia in ODIs has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every opportunity I’ve had in the green and gold,” Stoinis stated.
Stoinis, who represented Australia in 71 ODIs, further added that it was not easy for him to take such a step but it is time to focus next phase of his career.
Despite his retirement, Stoinis extended his support to the Australian squad, who are set to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. “I’ll be cheering the boys on,” he said.
The 35-year-old’s decision is seen as a strategic move to extend his T20 career, where he remains a crucial player in Australia’s plans.
Stoinis was part of the Australian preliminary Champions Trophy squad but will be replaced as the team finalizes its lineup for the February 19 event.
