Shahbaz Gill, a close aide of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has registered himself as a foreign agent for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the United States. Gill, who is currently in the US, filed his registration under the US Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) and received a registration number from the US Department of Justice.

Gill, who is facing sedition charges in Pakistan, was granted permission by the Lahore High Court (LHC) to travel abroad for one month. However, he has now filed a new plea seeking an extension of his stay in the US.

In his registration documents submitted on May 11, Gill informed US authorities about nine meetings he had held with American citizens on behalf of PTI between April 19 and May 9. These meetings focused on discussing the current human rights situation in Pakistan.

Gill’s written statement in the registration documents emphasized that his role as a foreign agent is on an honorary basis without any financial charges. He expressed his belief in PTI’s vision and stated that he aims to promote their political struggle for democracy and the rule of law. He intends to raise awareness among people and officials in the United States about the political situation in Pakistan and PTI’s efforts.

Furthermore, Gill outlined his plans to hold meetings with government officials, including congressional representatives, senators, and relevant officials from the State Department or Department of Justice. He also expressed his intention to engage with the general public and Pakistani Americans to discuss the ongoing political crisis in Pakistan, as well as issues related to human rights violations and freedom of speech.

The registration documents highlight Gill’s participation in public meetings and protests organized by Pakistani Americans as part of his efforts to enhance his understanding of governance in Pakistan and the violation of democratic values.

As the news of Shahbaz Gill registering as a foreign agent for PTI in the US emerges, it raises questions about the purpose and implications of his activities in the country. While Gill states that his role is honorary and aimed at promoting PTI’s political struggle, it remains to be seen how this development will be perceived both within Pakistan and internationally.
