The National Assembly (NA) has passed a resolution calling for the expedited trial of individuals involved in the violent incidents that took place on May 9, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan. The resolution, moved by Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, emphasizes the need for prompt action against the perpetrators and instigators, under the provisions of the Pakistan Army Act of 1952.

The resolution, unanimously approved by the lower house of parliament, highlights the demand for swift completion of legal proceedings against those responsible for the May 9 mayhem. While not explicitly naming the PTI or its chairman, the resolution condemns one political party and its leader for surpassing legal and constitutional boundaries by attacking military installations.

According to the resolution, these actions resulted in irreparable damage to the state and its institutions. It asserts that the agenda of the mentioned party is rooted in hostility towards Pakistan, rejecting claims of human rights violations during the handling of the culprits involved in the May 9 incidents. The resolution also dismisses baseless propaganda surrounding the matter.

The resolution emphasizes that individuals involved in violent acts targeting military installations must be swiftly tried and sentenced under the Army Act of 1952. It argues that in other countries where military installations are attacked, the jurisdiction to try such individuals lies with the armed forces.

Defense Minister Asif, while speaking in the National Assembly, clarified that no new legislation has been enacted regarding the May 9 violent acts. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to defending the country, highlighting the sacrifices made by armed forces personnel for national security. Asif strongly condemned the attacks on military installations, stating that they were intended to undermine the sacrifices of martyrs, an act that cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.

The senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader also accused the PTI of attacking the integrity and sovereignty of Pakistan. The resolution reflects the government’s determination to hold accountable those responsible for the violence and sends a strong message against any attempts to undermine national security and institutions.

The National Assembly’s resolution underscores the importance of expediting the trial of individuals involved in the May 9 rioting under military law. It emphasizes the need to uphold the rule of law, protect national institutions, and ensure accountability for acts that threaten the security and stability of Pakistan.
