Sugar prices in Lahore have soared to PKR 190 per kilogram, defying the government’s official rate of Rs. 165 per kg, despite a recent agreement with sugar mill owners to stabilize the market.

Retailers report that the wholesale price of a 50kg sugar sack has climbed to Rs. 9,100, making it impossible for them to sell at the government’s capped price. In addition, several shopkeepers claim that these sacks are underweight by 100 to 200 grams, adding further financial strain.

As a result of high procurement costs and strict price controls, many shopkeepers have halted sugar sales, stating they cannot afford to operate at a loss.

Consumers across the city confirm that sugar is widely being sold at Rs. 190 per kg in open markets. Many are calling on authorities to strengthen price monitoring and enforcement, urging the government to take swift action to ensure compliance with the official pricing.

This price surge comes shortly after the government announced a fixed sugar price of Rs. 175 per kg, which has failed to curb market rates.
