Electricity Gets Cheaper in August-Check Prices

Electricity consumers across Pakistan are likely to receive welcome financial relief as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) prepares to approve a reduction of Rs. 0.77 per unit in upcoming electricity bills. This anticipated relief, which will benefit millions of households and businesses, combines two major adjustments: the Quarterly Tariff Adjustment (QTA) and the Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA).

According to NEPRA, power distribution companies (DISCOs) submitted the fourth quarterly adjustment request for the fiscal year 2024–25. Following a public hearing held on August 4, 2025, the authority is expected to allow a negative adjustment of Rs. 1.89 per unit, which will be reflected in August, September, and October billing cycles. The QTA relief results from lower overall electricity production costs, due to improved agreements with power generation companies, higher demand, and the inclusion of captive power plants into the national grid. As a result, a reduction of Rs. 0.34 per unit under this head is expected specifically in August’s bills.

In addition, the Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA) for June 2025 is also under review. The Central Power Purchasing Agency – Guaranteed (CPPA-G) submitted the fuel cost data to NEPRA on July 16, and a public hearing was conducted on July 3.

Early estimates from the hearing suggest a further reduction of Rs. 0.78 per unit to be applied in August bills. Consumers had already received Rs. 0.50 per unit relief in July, and the remaining Rs. 0.28 per unit will now be adjusted next month.

If approved, these combined reductions under QTA and FPA will cut electricity bills by Rs. 0.77 per unit (inclusive of taxes), bringing much-needed economic relief to the general public amid rising inflation and energy costs.
