The Sindh government’s rollout of Ajrak-themed number plates has come under legal scrutiny after a petition was filed in the Sindh High Court on Wednesday, questioning the legality and fairness of the new policy.

The petition, submitted by social activist Faizan Hussain, names key provincial departments including the Excise and Taxation Department, Motor Vehicle Registration Wing, and DIG Traffic as respondents. It claims that the mandatory replacement of existing plates has placed an unnecessary financial burden on vehicle owners.

The new number plates are priced at Rs. 1,850 for motorcycles and Rs. 2,450 for cars. The petitioner argued that since most vehicle owners have already paid for official plates, charging additional fees is unjustified.

The plea also objected to the practice of impounding vehicles not fitted with the new plates, calling it excessive and lacking legal foundation.

Hussain further alleged that the policy is being misused by some officials for personal gain, turning a regulatory move into a profit-driven exercise. He claimed citizens are facing delays in receiving official plates, while counterfeit versions are openly available in markets.

The petition urged the court to direct the government to provide the new Ajrak-themed plates free of cost and to stop penalising or seizing vehicles over non-compliance.
