EU parliament alarmed by violence in Manipur

The European Union (EU) parliament has raised concerns over the ongoing violence in Manipur, a northeastern state in India, and called on Indian authorities to put an end to the clashes and protect religious minorities. The parliament expressed alarm at the escalating tensions between the Meitei, a predominantly Hindu community residing in and around the state capital Imphal, and the Kuki tribe, primarily Christians living in the surrounding hills.

According to the EU parliament, the violence has resulted in the loss of numerous lives, with at least 120 people reported dead. Additionally, the clashes have forced approximately 50,000 individuals to flee their homes, leading to a significant displacement crisis. The destructive nature of the conflict has also led to the destruction of over 1,700 houses and 250 churches, exacerbating the already dire situation.

The EU parliament specifically highlighted the role of “nationalistic rhetoric” in fueling the tensions and worsening the situation on the ground. In response to these concerns, the parliament has adopted a resolution calling on Indian authorities to swiftly intervene and put an end to the ethnic and religious violence. The resolution further emphasizes the importance of protecting the rights of religious minorities in Manipur.

The visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to France coincided with the EU parliament’s expression of alarm over the violence in Manipur. Prime Minister Modi’s arrival in France was marked by a reception from his French counterpart, Elisabeth Borne, at Orly Airport near Paris. While Modi embarked on his official visit, the EU parliament’s resolution drew attention to the urgent need for action to address the ongoing clashes in Manipur.

The situation in Manipur has been marked by long-standing tensions between various communities, particularly the Meitei and Kuki tribes. These clashes have been fueled by differences in religious and ethnic identities, leading to a cycle of violence and displacement. The EU parliament’s resolution serves as an international call for immediate intervention and measures to ensure the protection of all religious minorities in Manipur.

It is imperative that the Indian authorities heed the EU parliament’s concerns and take proactive steps to address the violence. This includes implementing strategies to foster peace, promote dialogue, and ensure the safety and security of all individuals affected by the clashes. The resolution serves as a reminder of the international community’s commitment to upholding human rights and advocating for peaceful resolutions to conflicts.
