Medical experts have issued a new warning for people who get cosmetic filler injections in the face. They say that, although fillers are very common, there is a serious complication that everyone should know about. If the filler blocks an artery or reduces the flow of blood, it can lead to dangerous problems such as skin damage, tissue loss, and even blindness.
Researchers studied 100 cases where filler injections went wrong. Using ultrasound, they found that some fillers had been injected too close to important blood vessels. This caused a “vascular occlusion,” which means the blood flow was blocked. While this doesn’t happen often, experts say that when it does, the results can be life changing. Damaged tissue, facial deformity, and loss of vision are among the worst outcomes.
Because of these risks, clinics are now being advised to do an ultrasound scan before injecting fillers. This helps doctors see exactly where the arteries are, making the procedure safer. Lead researcher Dr. Rosa Sigrist says that taking this step can prevent many complications. She explains that once the filler enters or presses on a blood vessel, it becomes very difficult to stop the damage unless it is treated immediately.
Dermal fillers are used to reduce wrinkles, add volume, and improve the shape of features like the lips or nose. But experts say that certain areas, especially around the nose, are more dangerous. The blood vessels in the nose connect to important parts of the head, and any blockage can cause serious harm, including blindness or even a stroke.
Experts are encouraging people to choose trained professionals and ask for safer methods, such as ultrasound guidance. A simple step before the procedure can protect patients from long term complications and keep cosmetic treatments safer for everyone.
