The Punjab government has introduced a new dress code for teachers working in public sector schools across the province. Under the new policy, all teachers will be required to wear black gowns during school hours while performing their academic duties.
The decision was announced in a notification issued by the Punjab School Education Department on February 19. According to the notice, the new dress code came into effect on Monday, February 23. All chief executive officers (CEOs) of District Education Authorities (DEAs) have been directed to ensure that the policy is implemented in their respective districts.
The government says the purpose of the new dress code is to promote unity, professionalism, and a strong identity for teachers. Officials believe that teaching is a respected profession that represents authority and moral leadership in society. They stated that a teacher’s appearance and conduct play an important role in building trust and respect among students, parents, and the wider community.
Under the approved rules, the black gown must be worn by all teachers, regardless of gender, grade, or location. The gown should be worn over modest and decent clothing that follows cultural and social values.
For male teachers, the recommended dress includes shalwar kameez in simple and sober colours, or pants and a shirt. They are advised to wear closed shoes or sandals with straps. Female teachers have been asked to wear dresses that reflect dignity and professionalism, along with closed shoes or modest sandals.
School heads will be responsible for checking daily compliance within their institutions. At the district level, CEOs have been instructed to monitor schools regularly to ensure strict implementation of the policy.
Officials say the move will help create discipline, equality, and a focused learning environment in schools. The government hopes that a clear and uniform dress code will strengthen the professional image of teachers across Punjab and promote a more organized educational atmosphere.
