Karachi Targets Unsafe Aesthetic Clinics

Karachi authorities have cracked down on unlicensed aesthetic clinics offering high-risk beauty treatments, amid rising demand for quick-fix procedures like HydraFacials, collagen injections, and laser treatments. The Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC) recently sealed 18 unregistered clinics in areas including Clifton and Ranchore Line.

Many clients continue to seek such treatments after seeing influencers promote “glass skin” or bridal packages online, often without checking the qualifications of the staff administering them. Some clinics have been found performing injections, lasers, and skin-whitening drips without proper training or safety measures. Inspectors reported reused needles, unprotected laser use, and procedures being carried out in unhygienic conditions.

Dermatologists warn that procedures like PRP, Botox, and laser treatments should only be performed by trained medical professionals. Non-specialists can cause severe complications, including burns, infections, and long-term skin damage. Experts also emphasize that diagnosing conditions like acne or melasma requires a dermatologist.

The crackdown highlights a regulatory gap, as aesthetic clinics are neither licensed dermatology practices nor officially recognized beauty salons. Complaints can be filed with SHCC, but sustaining enforcement is challenging, as many clinics reopen under new names or ownership.

Patients are urged to verify credentials and not rely solely on social media claims. Experts say awareness and caution are essential, as the popularity of high-risk beauty treatments continues to outpace regulations designed to protect clients.
