A Karachi sessions court has sentenced acclaimed filmmaker Jamshed Mahmood Raza, known as Jami, to two years in prison after finding him guilty in a defamation case brought by fellow director Sohail Javed.

The court ruled that Jami’s actions, including sharing an anonymous letter alleging sexual misconduct, harmed Javed’s reputation.

Although the letter did not name anyone, Javed argued that online speculation pointed toward him, and Jami did not clarify or deny those implications.

The incident dates back to 2019 when Jami read the letter at Lahooti Melo and later posted it on social media.

Judge observed that Jami failed to submit evidence proving he had no prior knowledge of the letter’s contents or intentions to defame. The court imposed a Rs10,000 fine, with an additional month in jail if unpaid.

Jami claimed he was unaware of the letter’s content and that it was given to him by event organisers. However, the court noted that no communication, author verification, or corroborative evidence was presented to support his claim.
