Information Minister Azma Bokhari has announced the introduction of a new law for theatre, set to be unveiled next week.

As per the details, the legislation, she emphasised, is being crafted in consultation with all relevant stakeholders to ensure it aligns with community expectations and cultural values.

“I want the theatre environment to be completely family-friendly,”

Bokhari said during a special meeting with culture reporters.

“Every citizen should be able to attend theatre shows with their family without any fear or concern.”

She made it clear that any theatre engaging in or promoting vulgarity will face strict consequences.

“Three official warnings will be given, and if the behavior persists, a lifetime ban will be imposed across Punjab,” she added firmly.

Additionally, Bokhari warned that departmental officers found supporting such content will be dismissed without delay. She also announced plans to launch a new family-oriented theatre at Lahore’s Alhamra complex, as part of the government’s broader effort to elevate the quality of entertainment available to the public.

The Information Minister also disclosed that the Punjab Censor Board will be reconstituted within the next two to three days, to better protect and uphold the province’s cultural values.

“Pakistani stage dramas are recognized worldwide for their uniqueness. We want to preserve and promote this tradition with integrity, high standards, and strong moral values,”

Bokhari remarked.

She further announced that Culture Day will be celebrated with zeal on April 17, with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz scheduled to participate in the festivities.

Reaffirming her commitment to reform, Bokhari concluded,

“My upbringing taught me to drive change constructively—not to demean others. The time for lax oversight is over. Notices from the Punjab Arts Council will now be enforced with full seriousness.”

Key officials including DGPR Ghulam Saghir Shahid, DG PUKAR Tanveer Majid, and Alhamra Executive Director Tauqeer Kazmi were present at the meeting.
