Punjab University has implemented a significant hike in its fee structure, with increases of up to 59% for various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The new rates are effective from this month, following approval by the university’s syndicate.

According to university officials, the steepest rise has been recorded in the LLM programme, where fees have gone up by Rs 7,825 — marking a 59% jump compared to last year.

Several other programmes have also seen a considerable increase. Fees for BSc, BCom, BBA, and MBA programmes have been raised by 15%.

The D Pharmacy fee now stands at Rs 23,000, up from the previous Rs 18,000. Similarly, LLB students will now pay 28% more than before, while those enrolled in medical diploma programmes face a 16% hike.

This development follows a growing trend of rising education costs in Pakistan’s public universities. Overall, the average increase in fees across major public sector institutions has reached 28%.

The university administration defended the move by citing inflationary pressures and the need for improved academic facilities. However, the decision has triggered concern among students and parents, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds, who fear the revised fees may limit access to higher education.

Student groups have already started voicing their disapproval on social media, calling for the government to intervene and ensure affordability in public education.
