The Sindh government has announced the closure of all public and private schools in Karachi on Wednesday, August 20, due to forecasts of further heavy rainfall. Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah confirmed that the decision was made to ensure the safety of students as the city braces for more downpours.
Senior provincial minister Sharjeel Inam Memon also confirmed the closure, saying that the government’s emergency response teams were fully operational during the ongoing monsoon rains. “The entire government machinery is active, drainage work is underway, and people’s safety is the top priority. Citizens should avoid leaving their homes unnecessarily,” he said.

At least seven people lost their lives in Karachi on Tuesday as torrential rains battered the metropolis, flooding several neighborhoods and bringing traffic to a standstill.
According to the Meteorological Department, Gulshan-e-Hadeed received the heaviest rainfall with 145mm, followed by Karachi Airport (138mm), Keamari (137mm), Jinnah Terminal (135mm), University Road (132mm), and DHA Phase VII (121mm). Other areas, including Surjani Town (111mm), North Karachi (108mm), and Korangi (97mm), also recorded significant rainfall.

Following the situation, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab declared a rain emergency across the city, placing all response teams on high alert. Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed the administration, rescue services, and drainage staff to remain fully mobilized to prevent urban flooding and ensure swift removal of rainwater.
