Careem has officially announced the suspension of its ride-hailing service in Pakistan, effective July 18. The decision was shared by the company’s CEO, Mudassir Sheikha, in a message posted on LinkedIn, where he described it as an “incredibly difficult” move made after much deliberation.

Sheikha attributed the closure to a mix of tough macroeconomic conditions, growing market competition, and shifting global investment priorities. He noted that these factors made it hard to sustain the level of investment needed to ensure a safe and reliable service for users in Pakistan.

While ride-hailing operations are coming to an end, Careem has confirmed that its customer support will remain available until September 18, 2025, to help users resolve any outstanding matters. In an email sent to its users, the company assured that individuals with money in their Careem Wallets will soon receive detailed instructions on how to retrieve their remaining balances.

The CEO also paid tribute to the team that built Careem’s presence in Pakistan, highlighting the efforts led by Junaid Iqbal and praising the courage, intelligence, and drive of the entire team that turned Careem into a household name.
