President Asif Ali Zardari met Iraqi President Dr Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid at the Baghdad Palace, marking an important step in strengthening ties between Pakistan and Iraq. The meeting took place during President Zardari’s official visit to Iraq, where he is also expected to meet other senior Iraqi leaders.
President Zardari arrived in Baghdad late Saturday night. He was warmly received at the airport by Iraq’s Minister for Culture, Ahmed Fakkak Al-Badrani. On Sunday, the Pakistani president was given a guard of honour upon reaching the Baghdad Palace, reflecting the importance of the visit.
According to a statement from the Presidency, President Zardari and President Rashid held a one-on-one meeting followed by lunch. During their talks, both leaders expressed satisfaction over the growing diplomatic contacts between the two countries. They said that high-level exchanges have helped improve mutual understanding and cooperation.
President Zardari pointed out that current trade between Pakistan and Iraq is far below its true potential. He said the two countries share strong historical and cultural links, but economic ties need to be expanded. He stressed that there are many areas where cooperation can grow.
The president highlighted several key sectors for future collaboration. These include trade and investment, agriculture, defence production, and information technology. He also mentioned construction, pharmaceuticals, and related industries as areas where both sides can benefit by working together.
Both leaders agreed on the need to strengthen economic relations and explore new opportunities that serve the interests of their people. They also discussed regional and security matters, underlining the importance of peace and stability.
The visit is being seen as a positive move toward deepening Pakistan-Iraq relations and opening new doors for cooperation in multiple fields.
