Toxic ‘Black Rain’ Reported in Tehran After Airstrikes

Residents in Tehran and nearby areas recently witnessed an unusual and worrying weather event known as “black rain.” The rare phenomenon appeared after intense airstrikes caused fires at several oil storage and refinery sites in Iran.

People in different parts of the city reported dark-colored raindrops that left oily stains on roads, cars, and buildings. Scientists explained that this type of rain forms when raindrops mix with heavy pollution in the air.

The air over Tehran contained large amounts of soot, smoke, and hydrocarbons released by burning fuel facilities. When rain clouds moved over the polluted area, the falling rain absorbed these particles, turning the water dark and dirty.

Akshay Deoras, a research scientist at the University of Reading, explained that the weather system brought rain at the same time that the atmosphere was filled with smoke and pollutants. As a result, the rain carried these harmful particles back down to the ground.

He said the black rain was shocking for many residents and served as a clear reminder of how pollution can affect the environment. However, he also noted that the bigger health concern may come from breathing polluted air for long periods.

Experts warn that the air in affected areas may contain toxic chemicals that can irritate the lungs, skin, and eyes. People are being advised to take precautions, especially during periods of heavy pollution.

Scientists recommend that residents stay indoors as much as possible until air quality improves. If people must go outside, they should wear protective masks and cover their skin to reduce exposure to harmful particles.

At the moment, detailed air quality data from some parts of the region remains limited. However, weather forecasts suggest that dry conditions are expected for the rest of the week, which may help reduce the immediate risk of more black rain.

Researchers also believe that the situation should gradually improve as smoke and pollution begin to clear from the atmosphere. Over time, natural wind patterns and weather changes can help remove some of the harmful particles from the air.

For many residents, the black rain event has highlighted the environmental and health risks that can follow large industrial fires and conflict-related damage to energy facilities.
