More than 78 million worshippers and pilgrims visited Islam’s two holiest mosques during the lunar month of Rajab, showing a huge rise in religious travel and devotion. Saudi authorities said the large number of visitors reflects both growing demand and better systems for managing crowds.
According to official figures, a total of 78.8 million people entered the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah during Rajab. This made it one of the busiest months of the year outside the Hajj season.
Out of these visitors, around 14.9 million pilgrims performed Umrah, while nearly 35 million people prayed at the Grand Mosque in Makkah. Thousands of worshippers also prayed in special sacred areas, including the Hijr Ismail, where more than 54,000 people offered prayers during the month.
The numbers also show a strong increase in international Umrah travel. More than two million pilgrims came from outside Saudi Arabia in Rajab alone. These visitors arrived from different countries across the Muslim world, showing the global love and connection Muslims have with the holy cities.
Saudi authorities said that improved crowd control, better transport systems, and digital services helped manage the large number of visitors safely. Special teams were active around the clock to guide pilgrims, manage movement, and ensure smooth entry into the mosques.
Many worshippers described the experience as peaceful and well-organized despite the heavy crowds. Facilities such as clean prayer areas, organized entry points, and helpful volunteers made the journey easier for pilgrims of all ages.
These figures highlight Saudi Arabia’s growing ability to host millions of visitors while maintaining safety and comfort. They also show how spiritual travel is increasing every year.
With Umrah travel rising and more pilgrims visiting outside Hajj season, Saudi Arabia is preparing for even larger crowds in the coming months.
The record numbers in Rajab reflect not only strong faith, but also improved management of sacred spaces, making the journey smoother for millions of worshippers.
