A huge pile of illegally dumped garbage has been discovered near a river outside Oxford, and the finding has shocked people across England. The trash heap was so large that it could be seen from space, yet almost no one on the ground noticed it for months.
The massive pile was hidden behind thick trees along a busy highway. Drivers passed it every day without realizing that a mountain of waste almost the length of three Olympic sized swimming pools was growing right beside them. Some parts of the heap even reached the height of a two story house.
No one is sure how the trash ended up there or how long it had been piling up. But its discovery has raised serious concerns about illegal waste dumping and the growing influence of criminal gangs involved in such activities.
Liz Gyekye from the environmental group Thames21 called the situation shocking. She said it is alarming that such a huge dumpsite went unnoticed and hopes those responsible will be caught quickly. According to her, this is an environmental disaster, especially because the site is so close to one of the country’s important rivers.
There is also fear that winter rains could wash the garbage into the nearby River Cherwell. This river flows through the Oxford University area, later joining the River Thames, which eventually leads to London and then out to sea. Any pollution could spread far beyond the dump site.
The Environment Agency said it identified the area as a high risk illegal waste site in July. A cease and desist order was issued, but dumping continued, leading to a court order last month to shut the site completely. The agency is now treating the case as a criminal investigation.
Satellite images show that in April 2024 the area was green and clean. By July this year, a long white streak of trash had appeared between the trees, revealing how quickly the illegal dump had grown.
