Authorities have raised concerns over the increasing risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in northern Pakistan, particularly in the glaciated zones of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

This alert comes as a result of a sharp rise in temperatures coupled with a new weather system approaching the region.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned that the prolonged heatwave may accelerate the melting of snow and glaciers, potentially triggering sudden floods and landslides in vulnerable valleys over the coming days.

Experts believe these environmental changes could severely impact local communities, infrastructure, and agriculture.

Residents in high-risk areas have been urged to remain vigilant, especially during the current and upcoming week, as the threat of flash floods and GLOF events remains elevated.

Emergency services and relevant agencies have also been directed to stay on alert and prepare for a quick response to any possible incidents.
