The National Highways and Motorways Police (NHMP) have temporarily closed Motorway M-1 for passenger vehicles due to persistent heavy rain in Islamabad and surrounding areas. The closure spans from Islamabad Toll Plaza to Rashakai Interchange, with authorities citing slippery conditions and poor visibility as safety concerns.

Officials explained that the decision was made to prevent road accidents amid ongoing monsoon rains. Travelers have been advised to postpone non-essential journeys and stay updated through helpline 130. Entry will remain suspended until weather conditions improve.

Islamabad and Rawalpindi experienced widespread rainfall on Thursday, part of a broader monsoon system affecting much of the country. The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) declared a rain emergency in Rawalpindi, raising its alert level and deploying teams in flood-prone areas.

Rainfall readings included 35mm in Bokra, 33mm in Pirwadhai, 31mm in Saidpur, and 23mm in Golra. WASA has stationed dewatering machinery and emergency crews at key locations such as Committee Chowk underpass and Murree Road to prevent water accumulation.

WASA’s Managing Director noted that the rains have positively impacted reservoir levels at Rawal and Khanpur dams. The increase in water levels is expected to enhance the supply of drinking water in the coming weeks.
