Dozens of peacocks have died in Sindh’s Tharparkar district as an ongoing heatwave and severe water scarcity continue to affect the drought-prone region, local residents and officials confirmed on Monday.

Though wildlife officials have not released an official death toll, villagers from Mithi Tehsil reported that over 100 peacocks have perished this month, with some suggesting the total number may have reached 300 since the beginning of the year. The main causes are believed to be extreme heat, dehydration, and heat-related illnesses.

Deputy Conservator of Wildlife, Mir Ijaz Talpur, said that reports of peacock deaths have increased over the past few days. A response team was sent to Bhimasar village to provide medical treatment for the birds.

Dr. Suwai Mal, Deputy Director of the Poultry Department, explained that extreme heat affects the birds’ neurological health, but treatment through vitamin and antibiotic-infused water is possible. He assured that his department is prepared to assist the Wildlife Department.

Meanwhile, residents have urged authorities to establish emergency treatment camps in larger villages. Videos of lifeless peacocks have been widely shared on social media, with local youth calling for swift action to protect the bird, which holds national significance in Sindh.
