The federal government has launched a major initiative to advance artificial intelligence (AI) in Pakistan, aligning with its broader Digital Pakistan strategy.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication confirmed the formal approval of the “National Artificial Intelligence Development Project” by the Planning Commission.
The project has received an initial budget of Rs534.639 million and aims to foster a strong AI ecosystem by promoting training, innovation, and responsible governance of emerging technologies.
Under the plan, seven AI hubs will be established in partnership with National Incubation Centers (NICs) located in key cities. These hubs will serve as focal points for research, skill development, and startup incubation.

Officials said the project aims to train 20,000 students in AI-related skills and support 150 startups through targeted grants. Additionally, 500 professionals are expected to earn advanced AI certifications, helping to build a qualified workforce for the future.
Looking ahead to the fiscal year 2025–26, the ministry plans to expand the initiative by setting up two additional AI hubs, conducting 3,000 training workshops, and hosting two national-level AI awareness events.
A central focus of the programme is to encourage responsible and transparent use of AI. Officials stressed that governance frameworks will be developed in line with international standards to guide ethical AI implementation.
