WhatsApp is testing a new feature called “Guest Chats” that will allow users to message people who do not have a WhatsApp account. The feature was first spotted by WABetaInfo in Android beta version 2.25.22.13 and is expected to roll out to both Android and iOS in a future update.
With this feature, WhatsApp users can generate a secure chat link, which can be shared through text, email, or social media. When a non-WhatsApp user clicks the link, they will be taken to a web-based chat interface similar to WhatsApp Web. From there, they can engage in real-time text-based communication with the WhatsApp user—without needing to install the app or create an account.
Importantly, WhatsApp ensures that these conversations are end-to-end encrypted, maintaining the platform’s standard for privacy and security—even when one user is not officially registered.

While promising, the feature does come with limitations:
-
No media sharing: Photos, videos, documents, stickers, or GIFs are not supported.
-
No audio/video tools: Voice notes, calls, and video messages are disabled.
-
No group access: Guest users cannot join or be added to group chats.
This makes the guest chat experience suitable for basic, secure one-on-one communication—but not a replacement for full WhatsApp functionality.
Industry experts suggest this update could be related to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which requires major messaging platforms to support cross-platform communication. By allowing non-WhatsApp users to participate in chats, Meta (WhatsApp’s parent company) appears to be moving toward compliance with global regulatory standards.
As of now, the feature remains in beta testing, with no official announcement from WhatsApp on a public launch date. However, broader availability is expected in the near future as the company continues refining the experience based on user feedback.
