Spotify is moving further into social media territory with the launch of a built-in messaging feature, allowing users to communicate directly inside the app.
The new option, currently available in certain Latin and South American markets, enables one-to-one chats between users who have interacted before. Those who have collaborated on playlists, joined Blend or Jam sessions, or share a Family or Duo plan are eligible. Before messaging begins, both parties must approve contact.
The company said the feature will eventually reach more markets, including the US, Canada, Brazil, European Union, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Users need to be over 16 to access it.
Until now, Spotify has relied on other platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram and Snapchat for music sharing. With this update, users can open Spotify links shared on these services and start a conversation if they approve the request. They can also send invite links to contacts directly.
Messages can be found by tapping the profile picture and navigating to the ‘Messages’ area. Users can react to individual messages with emojis and report any violations. Spotify clarified that while chats are encrypted at rest and during transmission, they are not end-to-end encrypted, allowing moderation of harmful or abusive content.
