Indonesia has received its first three Rafale fighter jets from France, marking the start of a major military upgrade for the Indonesian Air Force. The jets are part of a multi billion dollar defense agreement between the two countries.
According to the Indonesian Defense Ministry, the aircraft have been officially handed over and are now ready for use. This is the first confirmed delivery under the large defense deal signed in 2022 and expanded in 2023. The agreement is worth around $8 billion.
Indonesia has ordered up to 42 Rafale fighter jets. These advanced aircraft are built by Dassault Aviation. Along with the jets, the deal also includes French-made frigates and submarines.
The move is part of Indonesia’s plan to modernize its old military equipment and strengthen national defense. Under President Prabowo Subianto, the country has increased defense spending to improve air, sea, and land forces.
Indonesia is one of the biggest buyers in the global fighter jet market. Besides Rafale jets, the country has also looked at other options, including China’s J-10 aircraft and the US-made F-15EX jets.
For the future, Indonesia has signed a deal to buy 48 KAAN fighter jets from Türkiye. These are fifth-generation aircraft and are expected to further strengthen Indonesia’s air power.
Indonesia has held talks with Pakistan about possible deals for combat jets and advanced drones.
With the arrival of the first Rafale jets, Indonesia has taken a big step toward building a stronger and more modern air force, showing its growing focus on national security and regional stability.
