Apple is reportedly planning a major rebranding of the iPhone’s operating system, marking a significant shift in the company’s software strategy. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple intends to change the name of iOS, its long-standing iPhone operating system, in an effort to unify branding across its ecosystem.
Currently, iOS 18 is the latest version of the software used on iPhones and is expected to be officially unveiled in September 2025. However, sources suggest that Apple may rebrand the system before its release.
Why the Change?
The rebranding is said to be part of Apple’s broader plan to streamline its product ecosystem. At present, Apple devices operate on software platforms with different naming conventions:
-
iOS 18 for iPhones
-
watchOS 12 for Apple Watches
-
macOS 15 for Mac computers
-
visionOS 2 for Apple Vision Pro
This inconsistency stems from the fact that each OS was introduced in different years. By renaming iOS, Apple hopes to eliminate confusion, enhance brand coherence, and establish continuity across all its product lines.
When Will the Announcement Happen?
The anticipated name change could be officially announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), scheduled for June 9, 2025. WWDC has historically been the platform where Apple introduces significant software updates and new technologies, making it the most likely stage for this announcement.
If implemented, the rebranding would mark the first time Apple has altered the iOS name since its introduction in 2007 alongside the first iPhone.
