A revolutionary artificial intelligence (AI) security control system has been unveiled by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) police in Peshawar, marking a significant milestone as the first of its kind in Pakistan. Developed at the Central Police Office, this cutting-edge system is aimed at enhancing security measures within Peshawar’s red zone by analyzing data and conducting face detection analysis on the approximately 57,000 individuals who enter the zone daily.

The AI security control system is designed to gather and process data on every person, vehicle, and motorcycle entering the red zone, which encompasses several prominent locations such as the Central Jail, Police Lines, Corps Commander’s House, Central Police Office, Civil Secretariat, Governor House, and Chief Minister House. Notably, the system includes data on female militants, terrorists, and criminals for the first time, ensuring comprehensive surveillance. In case of any suspicious individual enters the red zone, an immediate alert will be triggered, notifying the nearest police check post.

Furthermore, the AI intelligence system will also record the entry of birds into the red zone, bolstering security measures. By employing this advanced technology, the K-P police aim to fortify security and surveillance within the red zone, ensuring the safety of these high-profile locations.

IG Police Akhtar Hayat Khan highlighted the significance of this technological advancement in improving security measures, emphasizing that it was made possible through the collaboration of various security forces. Many countries worldwide have already implemented similar technology-based systems to manage traffic and enhance security control, maintaining comprehensive data on individuals entering cities.

The initial implementation of the AI technology security system is focused on Peshawar, with subsequent phases set to extend its coverage to Balahisar Fort and other areas within the Cantonment region. According to IG Akhtar, the integration of this AI system into the red zone and sensitive buildings will bring about a substantial transformation in the security apparatus. Traditional investigation processes, reliant on retrieving CCTV camera footage, often face delays and obstacles. However, with the new AI system, crucial data can be accessed in real-time, enabling swift action and the apprehension of suspects.

CCPO Peshawar, Syed Ashfaq Anwar, an experienced officer who has participated in international-level security conferences, emphasized the effectiveness of AI-driven surveillance systems. Comparing the situation to that of America, where extensive CCTV camera coverage significantly deters criminals, he stressed the importance of deploying AI-based security systems and developing Smart Cities to reduce crime. By leveraging technology, law enforcement agencies can promptly address crimes and make arrests within hours of an incident.

In Peshawar, approximately 350 AI-equipped CCTV cameras have been installed around sensitive buildings, allowing the system to identify individuals wearing masks or helmets by cross-referencing their faces with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) records. Moreover, individuals wearing helmets or masks will be prohibited from proceeding during security checks.

The AI system incorporates advanced surveillance features, including “red lines” marked on walls, imperceptible to the human eye. Any individual crossing these lines, attempting to scale a wall or roof instead of using designated entrances, or engaging in suspicious activities will activate an automatic alarm, promptly notifying Quick Response Teams for swift action.
