Mohammad Hafeez has raised concerns about the country’s cricketing icons from the 1990s, questioning why they failed to secure an ICC trophy despite their dominance in international cricket.
During a discussion with Shoaib Akhtar, Shoaib Malik, and Sana Mir, Hafeez acknowledged their immense talent but pointed out their inability to win a major tournament.
He noted that Pakistan participated in the 1996, 1999, and 2003 World Cups, with the 1999 final being their closest attempt, yet they suffered a heavy defeat.

Hafeez further reflected on Pakistan’s struggles following that era, stating that the team endured a challenging phase, including a loss in the 2007 T20 World Cup final.
However, he credited Younis Khan’s leadership for securing the 2009 T20 World Cup, which he believed inspired a new generation.
He also mentioned the 2017 Champions Trophy victory as a turning point, adding that while Babar Azam played a minor role in that campaign, his presence helped shape the team’s future.
The discussion took a lighter turn when Shoaib Akhtar highlighted Pakistan’s dominance over India in ODIs, attributing their 73 victories to his playing generation.
