Saudi Arabia Begins T20I Quadrangular Series in Malaysia with High Hopes

Saudi Arabia Begins T20I Quadrangular Series

The Saudi Arabian senior men’s cricket team has arrived in Malaysia to compete in the Quadrangular T20I series, facing off against Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. The tournament begins on Thursday, April 24, at Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur.

Saudi Arabia will play Thailand at 10 a.m., followed by Malaysia’s clash with Singapore at 2 p.m. Each team will play two matches against all the others, with the top teams advancing to the final and the third-place play-off on May 2.

Saudi Arabia’s most recent T20I tournament was in December 2024 at the Gulf Cricket T20I Championship in Dubai. The team performed admirably, with standout performances, including Usman Khalid’s 57 runs and Usman Najeeb’s crucial 4 for 25 that helped secure an 11-run win over the UAE. Despite three wins in five matches, Saudi Arabia narrowly missed a place in the final due to Kuwait’s victory over Oman.

The team’s strength was also evident during the 2024 ACC Men’s Challenger Cup in Bangkok, where Saudi Arabia emerged victorious against Cambodia, securing both teams’ qualification for the ACC Premier Cup. Faisal Khan’s explosive batting, including 166 runs and 13 sixes, and Najeeb’s 10-wicket haul highlighted Saudi Arabia’s growing potential.

The tournament in Malaysia will also provide a crucial opportunity for the Saudi team to improve their world ranking. Currently ranked 32nd, a series of victories could propel them into the world’s top 30. Malaysia, ranked 26th, and Singapore and Thailand, ranked 38th and 55th respectively, will also be vying for significant ranking improvements.

In addition to the senior team’s efforts, Saudi Arabia’s under-16 squad is competing in the ACC U-16 West Zone Cup in Doha, Qatar, from April 23 to May 5, adding another layer of development for the country’s cricketing future.
