Test cricket leadership is set for a potential shift, with Saud Shakeel emerging as the frontrunner to take over from Shan Masood. Sources close to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have indicated that the 29-year-old middle-order batter is likely to be appointed as the new Test captain.
Although the PCB has yet to make an official statement, reports suggest the decision is nearly final, forming part of broader changes aimed at revamping Pakistan’s red-ball cricket structure, including possible adjustments to the coaching setup.

Shan Masood, who assumed the Test captaincy in November 2023, has faced criticism due to inconsistent team performances. Under his leadership, Pakistan managed only three wins out of 12 Tests, losing nine. Their struggles in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023–25 have been particularly notable, as they sit at the bottom of the points table.
The team’s defeats in series against Australia, Bangladesh, and South Africa, along with only two series wins—against Sri Lanka and England—have raised questions about Shan’s strategic acumen and consistency.
Saud Shakeel, currently serving as vice-captain, has impressed both with the bat and in leadership roles. With a batting average exceeding 50 in Tests, he has shown composure and resilience—traits that PCB officials reportedly see as vital for the team’s future direction.

His recent captaincy in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10, where he led Quetta Gladiators to the top of the table, has strengthened his case for the national role.
The possible change in Test captaincy is expected to be part of a wider reset after Pakistan’s disappointing WTC campaign. The team’s next red-ball challenge is scheduled for October 2025, when South Africa visits for two Tests and a limited-overs series.
