Cricket in South Asia came to a halt on May 9 as rising tensions between India and Pakistan led to the suspension of both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) on the same day.
Following a ceasefire agreement, the situation between the two countries has slightly improved, and reports now suggest that the IPL could resume around May 16. However, several foreign players have already flown back to their home countries, and many IPL franchises are now facing injury setbacks, forcing them to consider replacement options ahead of the playoffs.
Before the PSL’s postponement, availability of overseas replacements was limited, as many were engaged in Pakistan’s premier T20 league. With the PSL now on hold and no clear date for its return, IPL teams may have the opportunity to sign players who were previously committed to the PSL.

Earlier in the season, Corbin Bosch had chosen to play for Mumbai Indians despite holding a PSL contract, which led to a ban from the Pakistan league. That issue is no longer relevant, as the PSL suspension removes any such contractual conflicts.
Just before the PSL was paused, Punjab Kings announced Mitchell Owen as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell, with plans to bring him in after his PSL stint. Now, Owen and others like him could join their IPL squads immediately.
This shift in availability is a boost for IPL franchises looking to fill key gaps with experienced international talent as the tournament nears its crucial stages.
