In a strategic move ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup, PCB has reshaped its planned T20I series against Afghanistan into a tri-nation tournament by bringing in UAE as a third participant.

The series, expected to be hosted by the UAE, comes as part of Pakistan’s preparations for back-to-back major events—the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup in 2025.

Although the PCB initially planned to host Afghanistan at home in August, it proposed shifting the fixtures to the UAE and broadening the competition by inviting another team.

The adjustment aims to simulate tournament-like conditions and offer more game time to the national squad.

According to insiders, all three cricket boards have agreed in principle, and the final announcement is likely to follow the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting scheduled for today.

Mid-to-late August is being considered for the tri-series, which will help players adapt to UAE surfaces, widely expected to be the venue for the upcoming Asia Cup.

The decision also reflects PCB’s focus on T20 cricket, with the board reportedly prioritising short-format matches over ODIs to better equip the side for future challenges.

The move aligns with a broader vision to boost Pakistan’s white-ball credentials. With rising competition in the format, the tri-series offers a vital opportunity for testing combinations and sharpening match fitness under pressure.
