The ICC has explained the surprise disappearance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from its latest ODI batting rankings, saying the omission was the result of a technical glitch.
The absence of the two leading Indian cricketers on Wednesday stirred widespread debate, with many fans interpreting it as a hint of imminent retirement from the format.
The ICC, however, moved quickly to correct the rankings and restore both names.
According to the revised chart, Rohit holds the second spot among ODI batters, while Kohli is ranked fourth. Officials added that a number of irregularities in this week’s update are still under review.
The incident briefly overshadowed the players’ recent achievements. Both featured prominently in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, guiding India to its first ODI title since 2013.
Sharma was named Player of the Match in the final for his 76-run knock against New Zealand, while Kohli finished with 218 runs at an impressive average.
The duo had already retired from T20Is and Tests but remain central to India’s one-day setup. They are expected to play a major role in India’s upcoming series against Australia, starting October 19.
