Messi had sought permission to travel to Saudi Arabia, which had been granted by Galtier and sporting director Luis Campos on the condition of a win or draw, but not a loss. Nevertheless, Messi flew to Saudi Arabia without seeking permission again, resulting in his absence from training and creating tensions within the dressing room.
