Lionel Messi, the star forward of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal tally in Europe’s top five leagues with his 496th goal on Saturday. The goal not only secured a 1-1 draw against Strasbourg but also helped PSG clinch their 11th French league title, setting a new record. This triumph marks PSG’s ninth league title in the past 11 seasons.

Messi opened the scoring for PSG, but Kevin Gameiro’s equalizer prevented them from securing a victory. Nevertheless, the draw established an insurmountable four-point lead over second-placed Lens, guaranteeing PSG the championship with one match remaining in the season.

Reflecting on the accomplishment, PSG coach Christophe Galtier acknowledged the difficulty of winning any league, highlighting the challenges faced by reigning champions across European leagues this season. Galtier emphasized the significance of the title and cautioned against taking it for granted, emphasizing the competitive nature of football.

However, earlier this month, Messi faced a suspension of two weeks from PSG due to his absence from a training session, as he had traveled to Saudi Arabia to fulfill his sponsorship obligations as a Saudi ambassador. During his suspension, Messi was not permitted to train, play matches with the first team, or receive payment.

According to reports, Galtier had informed the players that they would have two days off if they emerged victorious against Lorient on April 30. However, following their unexpected 3-1 defeat to Lorient, the team was unexpectedly called in for training on May 1. Messi had sought permission to travel to Saudi Arabia, which had been granted by Galtier and sporting director Luis Campos on the condition of a win or draw, but not a loss. Nevertheless, Messi flew to Saudi Arabia without seeking permission again, resulting in his absence from training and creating tensions within the dressing room.

Messi’s tenure at PSG is expected to conclude this summer. Throughout the season, he has contributed 32 goals to the team’s success, showcasing his exceptional talent and impact on the field.

As Messi prepares for his next chapter, PSG celebrates their remarkable achievement of securing another league title. The club’s dominance in French football remains unparalleled, solidifying its status as one of the most formidable teams in the country.
