India created history by winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on home soil for the first time after defeating New Zealand by a huge margin of 96 runs in the final. The thrilling match took place at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket stadium, where thousands of fans celebrated a memorable victory.
Led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian team delivered an outstanding performance in front of a packed crowd. The win was special for the home supporters who still remembered the heartbreak at the same venue two years earlier when Rohit Sharma’s team lost the 50-over World Cup final despite an unbeaten run in the tournament.
This time, however, the story ended in celebration. India batted first and produced a powerful performance, scoring 255 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. It became the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final and the third-highest score in the tournament’s history.
The strong total was built on impressive batting from several players. Sanju Samson played a brilliant innings, scoring 89 runs from just 46 balls. Abhishek Sharma added a quick 52 runs from 21 balls, while Ishan Kishan smashed 54 runs off 25 deliveries. In the final over, Shivam Dube attacked the bowlers and scored 24 runs, helping India reach a record-breaking total.
New Zealand faced a difficult task while chasing the massive target. Their hopes quickly faded due to the excellent bowling performance of India’s star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. He delivered an outstanding spell, taking four wickets for just 15 runs in his four overs. His brilliant bowling earned him the Player of the Final award.
India’s vice-captain Axar Patel also played an important role with the ball. He took three wickets for 27 runs, further weakening the New Zealand batting lineup.
Despite their efforts, New Zealand could only manage 159 runs before being bowled out. The result gave India a comfortable victory and confirmed their place in history as the first team to win the T20 World Cup at home while successfully defending the title.
For New Zealand, it was another painful final defeat, as the team has now lost both of its appearances in T20 World Cup finals.
The tournament also recognized individual brilliance. Sanju Samson was named Player of the Tournament for his consistent performances throughout the competition, while Jasprit Bumrah received the Player of the Final award.
India’s historic triumph brought joy to thousands of fans and marked another proud chapter in the nation’s cricket history.
