German Club Drops Israeli Player Over Anti-Palestinian Social Media Posts

German second-division football club Fortuna Düsseldorf has officially announced its decision to terminate plans to sign Israeli striker Shon Weissman following widespread backlash over the player’s alleged anti-Palestinian remarks on social media.

In a brief but clear statement, the club confirmed that they would not be moving forward with the transfer, citing values-based concerns raised by supporters. The move comes in response to an online petition launched by fans, which quickly gained traction, demanding that the club uphold its ethical standards.

Supporters argued that Weissman’s past online activities—including liking and sharing posts advocating for violence in Gaza and making inflammatory comments about Palestinian prisoners—were incompatible with the club’s image and social responsibility.

One of the most controversial incidents occurred in October 2023, when Weissman allegedly endorsed posts supporting the erasure of Gaza and mocked the survival of Palestinian prisoners, suggesting they should have been executed. These actions sparked outrage among human rights advocates and football fans alike.

In response, Fortuna Düsseldorf reassured its community that it “stands firmly against all forms of hate speech and violence” and that the club’s decisions would reflect those principles.

The episode has reignited ongoing debates about athletes’ social media accountability, and the role of political expression in professional sports, particularly amid the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
