Pakistan’s celebrated javelin thrower, Arshad Nadeem, who made headlines by securing a silver medal at the World Athletics Championship 2023 and is now setting his sights on the Paris 2024 Olympics, recently met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During their meeting, the premier commended Nadeem for his remarkable achievement despite facing resource constraints, expressing pride in the athlete’s success. In recognition of his accomplishments, PM Shehbaz announced a reward of Rs2.5 million for Nadeem.
Emphasizing the abundant talent in Pakistan’s sports arena that needs nurturing, the prime minister highlighted the importance of promoting sports, especially in rural areas. Nadeem shared insights into his sports career and achievements, detailing his journey that began in 2012 with participation in the Youth festival and subsequent representation of Pakistan in various international events across different categories.
Describing the meeting with the prime minister as constructive, Nadeem discussed strategies to enhance sports development in the country. The gathering was attended by key officials including Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Minister of State for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Romeena Khurshid Alam MNA, and Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, a member of the Punjab Assembly.
Arshad Nadeem’s historic moment came on August 28, 2023, when he secured Pakistan‘s first-ever medal at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary, with an impressive 87.82-metre throw, earning him the silver medal. Neeraj Chopra of India clinched the gold with a throw of 88.17 meters. Despite this success, Nadeem faced a setback in October last year when a knee injury forced him to withdraw from the Asian Games, dashing hopes for another medal.
In his pursuit of excellence, Nadeem underwent elbow surgery in London in December 2022 and later knee surgery in the UK. His dedication to recovery and training reflects his determination to represent Pakistan at the highest levels of international athletics.
