The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) destroyed over 2,270 kilogrammes of unsafe poultry meat during a surprise operation at Lahore’s Tollinton Market, one of the city’s busiest centres for meat distribution.
The early morning inspection was part of a wider campaign targeting the sale of low-quality and unhygienic meat. Authorities temporarily sealed off access routes to the market and examined approximately 89,000 kilogrammes of poultry products being distributed across the city.
As part of the crackdown, 25 cold storage units and meat vendors were inspected. The PFA found diseased and decaying poultry being stored and prepared for sale, and officials declared the confiscated stock unfit for human consumption due to potential health hazards.

Three businesses were penalised for violating food safety standards. Penalties were issued on the spot, and warnings were given to other traders to strictly follow hygiene protocols.
A PFA spokesperson said the operation aimed to ensure that consumers across Punjab receive only safe and healthy meat products. He added that the presence of substandard poultry in the market not only endangers public health but also undermines food safety laws.
The authority confirmed that such actions would continue regularly and that surprise visits to food markets and storage centres were being increased. Traders were urged to follow regulations or face strict consequences.
