In a letter to shareholders and NEPRA, the business announced the shutdown of both the Korangi Town and SITE Gas Turbine Power Stations. The decision was officially authorized by K-Electric’s board of directors.
The business said that local gas has been unavailable, and imported LNG is too expensive, making it difficult to keep the units operational. It recognized that depending on imported LNG was not a sustainable option.
K-Electric stated that the shutdown of these units is part of a bigger strategy to change its power generating mix. The business stated that the units were already operating at reduced capacity owing to a shortage of inexpensive fuel and had become financially unviable. Shutting them down, it noted, will free up resources for more reliable and cost-effective energy sources.

Energy experts worry that this decision may increase the city’s reliance on other power sources, such as imported energy and alternative fuels, at a time when demand is increasing. They also warn that without long-term planning and investment in renewable energy or local fuel development, Karachi may continue to experience supply shortages and excessive electricity costs.
