Traffic police in Lahore have begun using body cameras on Mall Road as part of a new step toward greater transparency and accountability. The cameras are being built directly into the uniforms of traffic wardens to monitor their daily interactions with the public.

Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer, Dr Athar Waheed, explained that the body cams will capture real-time video of any interaction between officers and motorists. This will ensure that no traffic fine is issued without proper video evidence, offering protection to both the wardens and the public.

The initiative also aims to reduce public complaints and discourage any misconduct by either party. Authorities believe that the cameras will also be useful in observing public gatherings, protests, and processions in busy areas.

Dr Waheed added that strict legal action would be taken against those trying to interfere in the duties of traffic personnel. Although the current rollout is limited to Mall Road, further expansion may follow if the pilot phase proves effective.

While other cities have not yet adopted this measure, officials suggest that a successful trial in Lahore could lead to a wider implementation across Punjab.
