Telenor–Ufone Merger Nears the Finish Line

The long-awaited merger of Telenor and Ufone is approaching completion. The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) informed the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom that the agreement, which had been under evaluation for 18 months, is now in its final stages and might be concluded within one to two weeks.

CCP Chairman Kabir Sidhu noted that the procedure took longer because critical papers from PTCL were presented later, making it impossible to resolve the issue in a few months.

Nonetheless, other senators expressed alarm about how a review that lasted a year and a half is being completed so swiftly.

During the same discussion, there were queries concerning the government’s timeframe for the 5G spectrum auction.

The PTA chairman stated that they are ready to move forward, but that pending legal actions may create delays, despite the fact that no stay orders are presently in place on the 2600 MHz spectrum.
