Floodwater from the Ravi River has inundated parts of the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Narowal, following heavy releases from an Indian dam. The incident has raised alarm among the Sikh community and heritage conservation groups.
Reports say the shrine, considered one of Sikhism’s holiest sites as it marks the resting place of Baba Guru Nanak, is submerged by 5–7 feet of water. Visuals circulating on social platforms show water levels creeping through the shrine’s courtyards and halls.
Indian media quoted a gurdwara staff member saying the water has entered the central area of the site. This has prompted urgent calls from residents and religious leaders for swift government action to safeguard the landmark.
The Kartarpur Corridor, a symbol of peace between India and Pakistan, has been impacted by flooding before. In 2023, rising river levels forced authorities to close the corridor temporarily, though the shrine remained safe at that time.
Officials have not yet detailed the scale of damage or announced protective plans, but emergency measures are being urged as fears of further flooding persist.
